The story of T1 Combatives began when a team of ex-special forces operators from the Singapore Army's Special Operations Force (SOF) and the Republic of Singapore Navy's Naval Diving Unit's Special Warfare Group (SWG) — also known as the A-team — came together to address a common issue faced by most military and law enforcement units: the lack of grappling knowledge. Many self-defense systems designed for government units focus heavily on striking to disengage or bring down an attacker. This emphasis on striking led to grappling being underdeveloped and overlooked, despite its importance in various encounters, from searches and arrests to subduing non-compliant aggressors when firearms cannot be used. With their extensive backgrounds in both military operations and combat sports, three special forces operators united to bridge the gap between combat sports and military experience. Their goal was to help those on duty better understand self-defense and how to use grappling techniques to achieve mission success.
Jimmy is the Chief Executive Officer and founder of T1 Combatives. After serving for over 7 years in the Singapore Armed Forces, a majority in the highly elite Special Operations Force (SOF), he retired with a wealth of experience in operational combat and training. As the Head of Combatives at SOF, Jimmy played a pivotal role in shaping the unit’s combat training methodology, with a particular focus on unarmed combat techniques and concept essential for the unit. His vision is centered on equipping professionals with the skills needed to perform effectively in situations where unarmed combat is crucial. Under his leadership, SOF’s unarmed combat training programs were refined to emphasise the integration of grappling techniques, which are vital in a variety of scenarios, from suspect apprehension to subduing non-compliant aggressors when firearms are not an option.
Jimmy’s background in both military operations and combat sports inspired the development of T1 Combatives, set up to teach military personnel and law enforcement officers how to safely and effectively handle aggressive individuals in high-pressure situations. With his unique blend of expertise, Jimmy continues to contribute to the professional development of military and law enforcement personnel, bridging the gap between combat sports and real-world operational needs.
